Electrophotographic printing

Despite the many advantages of electrophotographic printing processes, a principal economic disadvantage remains each print costs the same. 

Humectants and low vapor pressure cosolvents are added to inhibit drying of ink in the no22les. Surfactants or cosolvents that lower surface tension are added to promote absorption of ink vehicle by the paper and to prevent bleed. For improvements in durabiUty, additional materials such as film-forming polymers have been added. Ink developments are providing ink-jet prints with improved lightfastness, waterfastness, and durabiUty. As a result, such prints are beginning to rival the quaUty of electrophotographic prints. 

Patents have been issued for the use of polydiacetylene derivatives as coloured photoresist films and electrophotographic print-out materials " . ... 

Electrophotographic printing involves a sequence of interacting processes which must be optimized collectively if quahty printing is to be achieved. With respect to Fig. 19.77 they are as follows. 

Organic electrophotographic photoreceptors are also widely used in laser printers [13,14]. The principal of these printers is almost the same as in a photocopier except the direct generation of the image by a laser instead of the optical system in a copier. Photoreceptors of the laser printers have to absorb in the near infrared range of spectrum. The third area in which photoconductive polymers or polymer composites are applied are electrophotographic printing plates. 

Besides the application of photoconductive polymers in photocopiers these materials are also widely used in laser printers in the last years. The third area in which photoconductors are applied is the manufacturing of electrophotographic printing plates.
