Electroosmotic dewatering

The basic point here is that ECT causes a net flow of water from the anode to the cathode, causing electroosmotic dewatering (EOD) of the tissue the experimentally observed flow of water from anodic site (dry) to the cathodic site (oedema) of the tumor tissue can be explained only by an electroosmotic mechanism.

There is an additional pressure drop across the cake, developed by electroosmosis, which leads to increased flow rates through the cake and further dewatering at the end of the filtration cycle. The filtration theory proposed for electrofiltration assumes the simple superposition of electroosmotic pressure on the hydraulic pressure drop. 

Many earlier geotechnical studies exist of the electroosmotic effect in soils and clays with an emphasis on dewatering in this chapter we limit the discussion to the more recent activities aimed at decontamination of pollutants. Most laboratory tests have used a onedimensional geometry and inert carbon electrodes.
