Monolayer structures and epitaxial growth of vapor-deposited crystalline phthalocyanine films on single crystal copper substrates were studied using low energy electron diffraction Ordered monolayers of three different phthalocyanines, copper, iron, and metal-free, were seen on two different faces of copper, the (111) and (100). The monolayer structures formed were different on the two crystal faces and the several phthalocyanines yield nonidentical monolayer structures. [Pg.105]

Arrangements of alkanethiolates on other faces of the An crystal are also different from those described for Au(lll). Electron diffraction studies showed the square symmetry for alkanethiol monolayers on the Au(lOO) surface, with the distance between adjacent sulphur atoms being 4.54 A. This arrangement may, however, be an oversimphfication of a more complicated stmcture. Possible overlayer stmctures of alkanethiolates on Au(llO) and Au(OOl) surfaces are discussed by Scoles and coworkers. Gold-sulphur bonding was found to be stronger at the Au(llO) than at the Au(lll) surface. ... [Pg.572]

The ordered structure and molecule orientation in the monolayers, as suggested by the Hardy model, have been studied by various means. Electron diffraction techniques, for example, including both reflection and transmission, have been employed to examine the molecular orientation of adsorbed monolayers or surface hlms. The observations from these studies can be summarized as follows [3]. [Pg.80]

No direct method exists by which monolayer film structures on water can be studied. Therefore, the LB method has been used to study molecular structures in past decades. The most useful method for investigating the detailed LB-deposited film structure is the well-known electron diffraction technique (or the scanning probe microscope [Birdi, 2002a]). The molecular arrangements of deposited mono-and multilayer films of fatty acids and their salts, using this technique, have been reported. The analyses showed that the molecules were almost perpendicular to the solid surface in the first monolayer. It was also reported that Ba-stearate molecules have a more precise normal alignment compared to stearic-acid monolayers. In some investigations, the thermal stability of these films has been found to be remarkably stable up to 90°C. [Pg.94]

Recent relevant work has made use of transmission electron diffraction, the theory of which we discussed in Section 2.5. This technique has a very straightforward interpretation which, combined with improved experimental methods, has provided very precise results. Two papers are of particular importance in this context. Garoff et al. [137] studied monolayers of cadmium stearate. Their substrates were 2 nm layers of SiO coated on 10 nm layers of amorphous carbon on 200 mesh Ni elec-... [Pg.64]

Thermal behavior of Cd stearate, Cd arachidate and Cd behenate mono-layers was studied by Riegler [53] using electron diffraction. This study confirmed the previous observations on the disordering of the monolayers starting well before the melting temperature. The relationship between the length of the alkyl chain and the temperature at which the alkyl... [Pg.651]

Studies of the Fully Collapsed Monolayer. Collapsed monolayers of all polymers were examined by IR spectroscopy and in most cases by electron diffraction using a Phillips EM300 electron microscope set for selected area diffraction. Viewing of the specimens in the microscope... [Pg.342]
