Elastic tensor nature

The effective elastic properties (the bulk modulus K and the shear modulus p) of the connecting set and nonconnecting set may be calculated by using standard formulas from the physics of composite materials (e.g., Hashin-Strikman formulae [133, 134]) accounting for the tensor nature of elastic properties (Fig. 46). [Pg.204]

Surface Rheology. Surface rheology deals with the functional relationships that link the dynamic behavior of a surface to the stress that is placed on the surface. The complex nature of these relationships is often expressed in the form of a surface stress tensor, P8. Both elastic and viscous resistances oppose the expansion and deformation of surface films. The isotropic (diagonal) components of this stress tensor describe the di-latational behavior of the surface element. The components that are off-diagonal relate the resistance to changing the shape of the surface element to the applied shear stresses. Equation 7 demonstrates the general form of the surface stress tensor. [Pg.28]

The return mapping techniques in inelastic solutions are a natural consequence of splitting the total strain into elastic and inelastic strains. Let tensor uy, an incremental field to describe the deformation, and its gradient, Vt/,y, show the deformation rate. The solution is implemented by the following steps. Step 1 introduces a loading condition such as F = (/, 4- V ,t)Fj." where ly is the unity second-rank tensor and the superscripts n and n 4-1 represent, respectively, the previous and current load steps. In step 2 the material is elastically stretched... [Pg.193]

All above means that the ferroics can be regarded as a general notation for the materials, where at T < (so-called low-temperature phase) some reorientable physical quantities (order parameters) spontaneously appear. Latter order parameters can be of vector (spontaneous electric polarization, spontaneous magnetization) or tensor (second order tensor like spontaneous deformation or higher order tensors like elastic moduli and piezoelectric coefficients) nature. In low-temperature phase ferroics can usually split into domains, their switching being possible by the external fields. [Pg.3]

Reduced system properties are operators of different nature, depending on the linked variables. The generalized elasticity and shear modulus is a tensor of rank 3 because it links two tensors of rank 2. The same applies for the generalized viscosity. [Pg.128]

Theory and Physics of Piezoelectricity. The discussion that follows constitutes a very brief introduction to the theoretical formulation of the physical properties of crystals. If a solid is piezoelectric (and therefore also anisotropic), acoustic displacement and strain will result in electrical polarization of the solid material along certain of its dimensions. The nature and extent of the changes are related to the relationships between the electric field (E) and electric polarization (P). which are treated as vectors, and such elastic factors as stress Tand strain (S), which are treated as tensors. In piezoelectric crystals an applied stress produces an electric polarization. Assuming Ihe dependence is linear, the direct piezoelectric effect can be described by the equation ... [Pg.1014]

For a viscous fluid we let the stress depend on D and for the elastic fluid we let it depend, via the slippage tensor, on b. It would therefore be natural to explore the consequences of assuming... [Pg.470]
