Elastic strip

Kalyanasundaram, Kumar, and Kuloor (K2) found the influence of dispersed phase viscosity on drop formation to be quite appreciable at high rates of flow. The increase in pd results in an increase in drop volume. To account for this, the earlier model was modified by adding an extra resisting force due to the tensile viscosity of the dispersed phase. The tensile viscosity is taken as thrice the shear viscosity of the dispersed phase, in analogy with the extension of an elastic strip where the tensile elastic modulus is represented by thrice the shear elastic modulus for an incompressible material. The actual force resulting from the above is given by 3nRpd v. [Pg.339]

The elastic strip or sheet is removed from the tubes, and it is found to swell on lowering the temperature and to contract on raising the temperature through the temperature interval from 20° to 37° C, as depicted at the right in Figure 5.13. A sheet of y-irradiation cross-linked (GVGVP)a5i is shown in Figure 5.14. [Pg.149]

The reduction of the elementary elastic strip that contracts and relaxes to a rotary motor has been demonstrated by Steinberg et ah In that case, a circular elastic band was constructed. In a continuous manner it was wrapped around a set of pulleys and through a pair of baths, one bath providing the correct chemical energy for contraction and the other for relaxation. In this way a chemomechanical rotary motor was constructed. [Pg.175]

One advantage of the energy balance method is that influence of pre-stresses or residual stresses can easily be studied. These stresses increase the stored elastic energy, hence the available energy for crack propagation they reduce the quasistatic force of adherence. This point has been theoretically and experimentally shown by Kendall for peeling (18) when an elastic strip (thickness h, width b) is stretched to e = dL/L before placed on a rigid... [Pg.71]

Consider a set of closed elastic strips. Each strip is characterized by a number k that counts the number of times the ends of the strip are twisted by 2n before they are glued together to produce a ring, Figure 5.6. The ring with... [Pg.126]

Within narrow iimits regarding the geometry and the material it is possible to demold undercuts through an elastic strip-over Moderate elastic deformation and high elongating capability of the plastic e.g. for the production of lids made from LDPE, may save a complex demolding mechanism. [Pg.45]
