Much as in other mammals, human females concentrate in their mammary regions features potentially related with infant-directed communication. The potential semiochemical significance of the human breast will be examined here in terms of 1) morphology and secretory activity of areolar skin glands 2) infant responses when exposed to the effluvium of their mother s breast and areolae, and to the odour of related secretions 3) volatile compounds present in pure areolar secretions as compared with those of milk 4) relations of maternal areolar gland endowment to adaptive outcomes in the infant and the mother.

Moderate and reversible alopecia secondary to telogen effluvium is common (7-30%), and sometimes recedes despite continued treatment (305). Alopecia areata has very occasionally been described (306). 

Injection-site alopecia has been reported in three patients, affecting the thighs in two patients and the abdomen in one (307). A reversible focal telogen effluvium secondary to high local concentrations of interferon alfa was the most likely cause, indicating that rotating injection sites are needed to prevent this adverse effect.

The first two propositions deal with the physical structure of matter. There are two levels of organization—minutest particles, Boyle s corpuscles, which may associate into coalitions of minute masses or clusters. Alopecia induced by physical stress has been termed trichotillomania. This condition occurs from physically pulling or twisting a localized area of hair until noticeable thinning develops. This type of hair loss sometimes occurs in children who unconsciously pull or twist a region of hair. A similar type of hair loss may also occur in adults. Telogen effluvium is a term used to describe a sudden but diffuse hair loss caused by an acute physical or psychological stress. This condition usually lasts only a few months and is reversible. Drugs used in chemotherapy often induce alopecia however, this type of hair loss is also usually reversible and the new hair after chemotherapy can be of a different curvature or color.

The frequency and severity of adverse reactions are also specific for the various retinoids (Table IX). For example, cheilitis, facial dermatitis, and conjunctivitis are frequently occurring side effects of isotretinoin therapy whereas telogen effluvium, palmar-plantar desquamation, skin fragility, paronychia, arthralgias, and pruritus are more commonly observed in patients receiving etretinate. 

Another case of alopecia in the form of telogen effluvium was reported in a 27-year-old female patient in her second week of a 2-week course of daily albendazole 400 mg for treatment of cutaneous larva migrans. Remission was noted in 3 months will full restoration of normal hair observed at 11 months [ll ].
