Effect on tensile strength

Silanol-terminated PDMS and hexadecyltrimethylammonium-exchanged clay were used to prepare PDMS-clay nanocomposites via melt intercalation [90]. The melt intercalation nanocomposites did not achieve as high a reinforcement as the aerosilica silicone hybrid, but the nanocomposite formed from solution had a nearly identical reinforcing effect on tensile strength as the aerosilica composite. 

Radiation doses up to 108 r. have little effect on tensile strength or other properties at room temperature. Gas permeability is also unaffected. A most striking and useful development is the increased strength above 100°C. of polymers treated with about 107 r. The polymer will withstand 100 to 400 lb./sq. in. at these temperatures, which is sufficient to permit containers to support their own weight. This has opened up new markets for polyethylene as a material for heat-sterilizable containers, pipe liners, motor winding material, corrosion-resistant gaskets, etc. 

One additional factor must be covered. While not classically polyurethane-specific in nature, it is nonetheless a useful tool. The use of a filler can produce a marginal effect on tensile strength. Adding particles to a matrix reduces the tensile... 

When lead is added to brass up to about 4%. improved machinabtlity results. The lead has practically no effect on tensile strength or hardness. However, for cold-worked materials, lead does lower ductility and shear strength.
