Education Classical

The classical approach to structure determination in carbohydrate chemistry is best exemplified by Fischer s work with D glucose A detailed account of this study appears in the August 1941 issue of the Journal of Chemical Education (pp 353-357)... [Pg.1052]

We will now begin our journey in total synthesis from the 1950s to the 1990s. As you read through these pages we hope your journey to Ithaca will be as adventurous, educational, and enjoyable as was our odyssey of putting together this book on Classics in Total Synthesis . [Pg.18]

The modern approach to chemical education appears to be strongly biased toward theories, particularly quantum mechanics. Many authors have remarked that classical chemistry and its invaluable predictive rules have been downgraded since chemistry was put into orbit around physics. School and undergraduate courses as well as textbooks show an increasing tendency to begin with the establishment of theoretical concepts such as orbitals and hybridization. There is a continuing debate in the chemical literature on the relative merits of theory as opposed to qualitative or descriptive chemistry 1-6). To quote the late J. J. Zucker-man who supported the latter approach (3). [Pg.13]

From Essays, Civil and Moral, and The New Atlantis, by Francis Bacon Areopagitica and Tractate on Education, by John Milton Religio Medici, by Sir Thomas Browne. New York, Collier [cl909] Harvard Classics v. 4. [Pg.40]

I hope that one day biochemical individuality will be routinely highlighted in all textbooks of health, medicine, physiology, nutrition, and anatomy. And I hope that key aspects of itabout diet, drugs and alcohol, for examplewill become part of everyone s education. At least until that day arrives, this classic book has a vital role to play. [Pg.270]

For many years pharmacy education was based on the study of a number of classic basic and applied sciences such as chemistry, mathematics, pharmaceutics, pharmacognosy and pharmacology. Students were then examined separately in these different disciplines. It is only fairly recently that pharmacy practice and pharmaceutical care have been introduced as integral parts of the pharmacy curriculum. Attempts at finding the best way to test the competence of pharmacy students were made at roughly the same time. [Pg.438]

The education provided drew heavily on the chronicle which Raffles had popularised to promote the older meanings of Melayu as a tradition of kingship descended from Melaka (Roff 1967 28n and 135). Malays were educated to be a people loyal to their sultans and to a classic tradition, even though many of those attending such schools were from... [Pg.96]

In this article I hope to introduce chemical educators to some of the work carried out in the philosophy of chemistry. The relevance of such work and especially that carried out on the reduction of chemistry to physics is considerable, and especially so in the case of physical chemistry. As the very name of the discipline implies, physical chemistry juxtaposes aspects of chemistry with aspects of physics. The relationship between these two classical areas of science needs to be considered in order to ascertain the extent to which chemistry should be taught as applied physics or to inform the teaching of physical chemistry per se. [Pg.59]

On a more physics-oriented approach to quantum mechanics, Kalkanis et al. (90) accepted that the main misconceptions are caused by the overlapping/mix-up of the conceptual frameworks of classical and quantum physics, and from epistemological obstacles to the acquisition of the proper knowledge. Furthermore, they proposed an educational strategy for a simple, qualitative and sufficient approach to quantum mechanics by prospective teachers. The strategy... [Pg.90]
