Edge termination

Contrarily to the basal plane, the prismatic edges terminating the graphene layers as well as defects in the basal plane are highly reactive and usually saturated, with H, 0, or N atoms being the key players in most of the catalytic applications of carbon materials (see Chapter 19). The abundance of groups illustrated in Fig. 15.5 is well known from organic chemistry. These functionalities define the acidity/basicity and also the hydrophilic character of the nanocarbons. [Pg.398]

The sequence la-2-6-7-8-9 (or 9a) is labeled as a branch B the successive sequence of changes of educt edges terminates at the stable synthons 9 (9a) as can be seen from synthon 8, the program works with valence states of charged atoms and offers quasi-structures in their extreme forms. [Pg.177]

Based on the two topological identities, (1) each edge of a polyhedron is shared by two faces, then n X F = 2 X E, and (2) each edge terminates with two vertices, then p x V = 2 x E, the following Schlafli relationship was found ... [Pg.297]

There has been a number of studies of carbon-supported platinum and platinum-alloy catalysts. INS has been used in the characterisation of activated catalyst supports from different natural sources through patterns of edge termination reflected in the INS spectra in the out-ofplane C-H bending region near 880 cm [54,55]. [Pg.305]

The sum of all the elements in a row indicates the degree of the corresponding vertex. Since any edge terminates on two vertices, the sum of all the elements in a cdumn is two. These results are expressed thus ... [Pg.78]

Fig. 9. Ball model of a hexagonal M0S2 cluster, obtained from a simple truncation of a bulk MoS2(0 001) slab. Left The cluster is oriented with the (0001) basal plane in parallel with the paper, and it exposes the two different fundamental low-index edge terminations, the (10 10) molybdenum edge and the (10 10) sulfur edge. Right Side view of the edges. The molybdenum atoms (dark) are coordinated to six sulfur atoms (bright) at the sulfur edge, whereas at the molybdenum edge the coordination to sulfur is only four.
