Dysthyroid endocrine orbitopathy (EO) or thyroid eye disease is the most common disorder affecting the orbit, usually presents in middle-aged women, and represents the most frequent cause of unilateral or bilateral proptosis in adults (Mueller-Forell and Pitz 2004 Aviv and Miszkiel 2005). EO is predominantly associated with autoimmune hyperthyroidism, which is also referred to as Morbus Basedow or Grave s disease (Mueller-Forell and Pitz 2004), but the orbitopathy may precede thyroid disease or occur with euthyroid or hypothyroidism (Aviv and Miszkiel 2005). EO is associated with edema of all structures of the orbit. The hallmarks of EO, however, are spindle-shaped edema of the intra-orbital muscles, which leaves out the tendons, and enlargement of the intra-orbital fat tissue (Fig. 12.7) (Mueller-Forell and Pitz 2004 Aviv and Miszkiel 2005). Muscular edema usually is most pronounced in... [Pg.160]

With the exception of iodine-containing ones, no drug is known to be the cause of hyperthyroidism, The mechanisms by which some drugs, others than iodine-containing ones, provoke hypothyroidism are relatively well documented (36) In this section, we will briefly discuss dysthyroidism as a result of iodine contamination, stressing the role of XRF measurements in its detection. ... [Pg.108]

AMIODARONE INDUCED DYSTHYROIDISM HYPOTHYROIDISM FOLLOWED BY HYPERTHYROIDISM... [Pg.468]

Amiodarone, an anti-arythmic drug containing 37.2 % of organic iodine, may induce hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. Dysthyroidism can occur during treatment, but also many months after its discontinuation in patients with underlying thyroid disorders, as well as in subjects with apparently normal glands. We report the case of a patient who developed hypothyroidism followed by hyperthyroidism, related to amiodarone therapy. [Pg.468]

The pathogenesis of amiodarone induced dysthyroidism is discussed defective intrathyroidal autoregulation due to the high iodine level does not seem sufficient to explain hypothyroidism and h5q)erthyroidism in the same patient. Alternative explanations could be autoimmune phenomenas and genetic predisposition. [Pg.468]

Metathyroidism.—Production of abnormal secretions of the gland may complicate many varieties of Graves s disease and toxic adenomata of the gland. The condition is sometimes termed thyrotoxicosis, toxic goitre, and dysthyroidism. The chief... [Pg.420]
