Dyestuffs acid, charge

In the preparation of a dyestuff from aniline, nitrobenzene (as oxidant), hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide, ferric chloride is often used as catalyst, but sodium molybdate was substituted as a more effective catalyst. The materials were charged into a 4.5 m3 reactor and heating was started after addition of nitrobenzene, but the temperature controller was mis-set, and overheating at a high rate ensued. The exotherm was much higher than normal because of the more effective catalyst, and partial failure of the cooling water led to an uncontrollable exotherm. [Pg.1771]

Grafted cellulose powders such as Solka Floe have been grafted with polyacrylic acid and also rendered cationic by direct chemical reaction (54). Both of these modified cellulose products have been prepared on a large scale. They appear to show considerable promise for the removal of dyestuffs and other charged impurities from waste water such as textile effluents. They are also able to break emulsions of water and organics by removal of the surfactants (55). [Pg.18]

Copper complexes (152) of o-hydroxy-o -(p-aminoethylamino)diarylazo compounds have been prepared ° by the reaction of the corresponding o-chloro-o -hydroxydiarylazo compounds and ethylenediamine in the presence of copper(II) ions (c/. Section 58.2.3. l(iii)(c)). Dyestuffs of this type have been evaluated on nylon but are reported to have very poor fastness properties. Copper complexes such as (153) have been preparedby similar methods. Other, related tetradentate diarylazo compounds, e.g. (154), (155) and (156), are obtained by the reaction of a suitable diazonium salt with the appropriate diarylamine. Chromium(III) and cobalt(III) complexes of dyes of this type, in which the coordination sphere of the metal is completed by a colourless bidentate ligand such as ethylenediamine, salicylic acid or 8-hydroxyquinoline, are reported to have dyeing properties on wool similar to those of the comparably charged 2 1 complexes derived from tri-... [Pg.75]

Biltz found further that where acid and basic dyestuffs had opposite charges and were mutually precipitated, the formation of an insoluble chemical combination could be assumed. This corresponds to what is known of acid and basic dyestuffs in the state of crystalloids namely that they unite, and when the combination is insoluble a precipitate is of course formed. Doubtless such reactions occur in the case of many dyestuffs. The more colloidal the character of these dyestuffs the more nearly will the laws of colloidal reaction obtain. Moreover Biltz has pointed out that with colloids of the nature of gold such chemical reactions are not possible. Nevertheless colloidal gold is precipitated by positively charged dyestuffs. The cause is doubtless the neutralization of the charge on the particles. For further particulars attention is called to Chapter XI. [Pg.57]
