Dryers generally

The size of commercial cylinder dryers covers a wide range. The individual rolls may vary in diameter from 0.6 to 1.8 m (2 to 6 ft) and up to 8.5 m (28 ft) in width. In some cases, the width of rolls decreases throughout the dryer in order to conform to the shrinkage of the sheet. A single-cylinder dryer, such as the Yankee dryer, generally has a diameter Between 2.7 and 4.6 m (9 and 15 ft). 

Airborne mixing, e.g., fluidized beds and flash and spray dryers. Generally there is excellent mixing and mass transfer, but feed must be dispersible and entrainment and gas cleaning are higher. Mechanical vibration may also be used to assist solids movement in some dryers. 

For the drying of materials in sheets or masses, dryers capable of supporting the material in the desired atmosphere for an adequate period of time are necessary. In batch dryers, material is held in place and subjected to the desired conditions or cycle of conditions. In continuous dryers, the material is conveyed through the dryer, generally through a number of zones where different conditions are maintained. 

Spray Dryers. Spray dryers generally consist of a chamber through which heated air passes upward, countercurrent to the fall of finely divided droplets of the material to be dried. The spray of material is produced either by conducting the solution under pressure to spray heads or by turbine-type dispersers. The bottom of the drying chamber ordinariljf contains some form of conveyor for removing the dried material. Such dryers are employed in the manufacture of soap powder, milk powder, and similar materials. 

Process control systems generally operate with a constant set point. It should be emphasized that exact control is not always necessary and over instrumentation should be avoided. Solar dryers generally have some parts of large capacities that reduce the effects of disturbances. 

Portable dryers generally appeal to the farmer who has grain bins scattered in various locations, or who does custom drying off the farm. Portable dryers without a proper grain-handling... 

The dryers generally used for the drying of piece-form fruits and vegetables are cabinet, kiln, tunnel, belt-trough, bin, pneumatic, and conveyor dryers. Among these, the cabinet, kiln, and bin dryers are batch operated, the belt-trough dryer is continuous, and the tunnel dryer is semi continuous.

Filtered hopper dryers generally are used except when long drying times are required. This type dryer replaces the standard machine hopper. Generally, it forces hot dehumidified air through the plastic pellets in the hopper section through a closed air circulating system.
