Drum-casting machine

Figure 3.46 is a schematic of a "drum casting machine" which carries out steps 2-4 in the above procedure. For small batches, the casting solution can be made up the night before the run and put on a roll mill in sealed glass jars which are heated by infra-red lamps. The solution must then stand until all air bubbles are eliminated. If there is appreciable solvent-loss with time, the solution trough shown in Figure 3.4 should be closed.

The drum bushes, machined from bronze castings, being wearing items, are always replaced during any upgrade or refurbishment as a matter of course. (See Figure 6.)... 

A fatal accident and some other disasters, which were caused by small cracks, lead to a more strict consideration of the security of these steam drums. Parallel to these the economical pressure, due to the globalisation of the today s industry, lead to the increase of the pressure and the rotation speed of the paper production machines for a higher output of the production, which means, that all safety aspects from the design and the material will be exploited totally. On the other hand cast iron is also not a ductile and comfortable material, like the most steels for the pressure equipment.

Solution-cast film is produced on a larger scale for medical applications, battery separators, or other specialty uses with machinery of the type shown in Figure 3.2 [2], Viscous film is made by this technique. The solution is cast onto the surface of a rotating drum or a continuous polished stainless steel belt. These machines are generally enclosed to control water vapor pickup by the film as it dries and to minimize solvent vapor losses to the atmosphere.
