It is noteworthy that the mechanism of absorption requires that the drug should be in solution. In this chapter, the term dissolved or in solution refers to the state in which individual molecules are dispersed in the solvent medium. Complexed or bound molecules such as in micelles, emulsions, dmg polymer complexes, or inclusion complexes are excluded from this definition. With this definition, the dissolved form corresponds to the form that is absorbable in vivo. This distinction is important because complexation or other means of solubilization can also increase the apparent dissolved concentration of the drug, but these complexes are not really absorbable as is unless they dissociate into individual components.
