One major problem with the Driographic plate which caused its eventual withdrawal from the marketplace was high temperature "toning", a term analogous to scumming in conventional lithography, that is unwanted ink reception in the non-printing areas. While the Toray plate has apparently overcome some of the problems of the Driographic plate, toning of ink in the non-printing areas at high temperatures still remains a concern. There are several contributing factors to this problem which bear examination.
