Injection and monitoring systems. An injection well (A in Fig. 16.7), 500 m deep, was drilled into the lower confined limestone aquifer, and later a second well (B) was drilled 400 m west of the first one. Several methods are available for the drilling and installation of monitor wells. The advantages and disadvantages relating to ease of construction, character of formations penetrated, well diameter and depth, risks of contamination, and intended use of the well have been reported by several investigators ( 5, 6, 7). Drilling. Common drill rigs available for monitor-well installation include cable tool, air rotary, mud rotary, reverse rotary, and hollow-stem auger. The cable tool rig repeatedly lifts and drops a drill bit, drill stem, drilling jars, and rope socket. The drill bit crushes hard rock or loosens unconsolidated material and mixes the loosened particles with water to form a slurry or sludge. The sludge is removed at intervals by a sand pump or a bailer. [Pg.166]

For example, contamination was recently noted in the aquifer at Cape Cod, Massachusetts, requiring the Air Force to supply the residents with bottled water. The contamination at Cape Cod was discovered by an environmentalist who noticed chunks of undetonated explosive while touring the range. That forced the Air Force to drill some groundwater monitoring wells and, to everyone s surprise, the aquifer was contaminated with RDX. [Pg.39]
