For Ni exploration in the TNB and surrounding areas, till samples in thin drift areas can be collected from the flanks of bedrock outcrops, and from till exposures in road cuts and along lake shorelines and river banks. In areas of thicker cover, backhoe trenching and overburden drilling...

After thorough analysis of seismic and other exploration data, the next steps are management decision making and approval to proceed with exploratory drilling. The ultimate exploratory tool is the drift bit. 

A finishing drift (not illustrated) with no central hole is used to ram the "heeuiing above the top of the spindle and the top clay plug, if the latter Is to be solid. Some operators prefer to do this and afterward drill a small bole to communicate fire to the "pot to ignite the burst charge. A quicker method is to uae a "piercing drift to ram the clay and form the hole in the same operation (Fig. 4). 

A fairly heavy rawhide mallet is used to ram the composition, mainly because a solid metal hammer would soon deform the top of tbs drifts. (Note a rubber mallet is completely unsatisfactory it does not deliver enough impact to consolidate the clay or powder properly.) The spindle itself should of course be installed on a substantial base, such as a block of hardwood this can be done by drilling and tapping the underside of the metal shoulder and running a 5/16 or 3/8 bolt up through the wooden base, after recessing the bottom to accept the head of the bolt ... 

Samples of drill cuttings from the glacial drift and the Belly River Formation were analyzed by means of the X-ray powder camera method in an attempt to find laumontite. The results were negative. The only location in Alberta where laumontite has been found is in the Cretaceous Blairmore Group in the folded foothills in the southwestern corner of the province (MUler, 1972). What these observations indicate is that somewhat higher temperatures and pressures are required to form significant quantities of the zeolite laumontite than are avaUable in the study area. 

Drift for Squaring the-Hole,—Hie remedy for this is very simple, and can be performed with but little labor. After the hole in the hammer is drilled introduce the end of a square drift, and drive it steadily through with blows of a hammer. The drift will cub a clean hole, the exact counterpart of its form, and this hole will need no finishing, if the drift be properly made to insure its correctness as to being smooth and true. In order to perform the FEBEX in-situ test, it was decided to excavate a new drift. Prior to it, two pilot boreholes (FEBEX 95.001 and FEBEX 95.002) were drilled in the area.
