Drained casting

All of the drained casting techniques, e.g. slip casting, pressure casting and centrifugal casting, involve a solid-liquid separation process to form a dense green body (Figure 9.8). A mould is filled with a suspension and the liquid is separated from the solid particles.

Drain Casting or Hollow Casting. Terms used (more particularly in USA) for the slip-casting process for making hollow-ware, the excess slip being drained by inversion of the mould. 

Flood Casting. Term used in the British sanitary-ware industry for the process of slip casting in which excess slip is removed from the mould by draining. In other sections of the pottery industry the process is referred to merely as casting in USA the process is known as Drain Casting . 

Hollow Casting. See drain casting. Hollow Clay Blocks. Fired clay building blocks, usually of comparatively large size, with cells (air spaces) within the block they are used for wall construction and, with metal reinforcement, for floors and prefabricated panels. For specifications see B.S. 3921 ASTM - C34, C56, C112 and C212 (cf. hollow masonry unit ... 

Cast iron (or grey iron)—Often used in handling storm and oily water drains. Cast iron is very resistant to corrosion. The hub and spigot design is fabricated in 5 and 10-ft lengths, which may be modified with a special cutting tool. 

In order to produce hollow parts, after sufficient thickness is obtained for the solid, the remaining slip inside the solid is drained off. Because of this step, this method is also called drain casting. The process is shown schematically in Figure 13.9.
