Down-going

Model I shown in Fig. 1.163 is a slab-induced upwelling model. Upwelling generated along the down going slab-mantle boundary (Karig, 1971) or by secondary convection that is introduced by the slab (Sleep and Toksoz, 1971) causes back-arc formation (Karig, 1971). 

Here k is the proportionality constant between field and current (B = kI), Vp and Htv are the maximum positive and maximum negative power supply voltage, L and R are the inductance and resistance of the magnet, B is the instantaneous main field value, Su = (kIL)Vp and Sd = (kIL)Vn are the up-going and down-going slewing rates when B = 0, and a = R/kL.

You will very often need to find a rate constant or a half-life from real data. At the mid-ocean ridges, lavas are erupted from the mantle as the crustal plates are pulled apart due to the drag of the down-going slabs at subduction zones. The mid-ocean ridge (essentially a mountain range) usually has a median valley where most of the igneous activity is concentrated. The active zone is extremely narrow, just a few kilometers wide. Flow in hoppers depends on their type (gravitational or forced), bulk density of the material, the shape and location of the feed inlet (direct or tangential feed, straight or with a chamfer on the down-going side), as well as on the type of screw and the barrel.
