Kraybill (1956) observed that 10-30 % of the tocopherols in dairy products were destroyed when irradiated with 80,000 roentgens per hour. Rose et al. (1961) irradiated solutions of DL-alpha-tocopherol with a Co source and observed extensive destruction of this vitamin and a rise in products similar to those obtained by autoxidation. Irradiation in saturated solvents destroyed more tocopherol than did irradiation in unsaturated solvents (such as methyl linoleate). [Pg.617]

Although bacteria present in rotifer cultures can provide vitamin B (Yu et al, 1989) and microalgae such as Chlorella sp. and I. galbana provide vitamin C (Merchie et al, 1995), extra enrichment of thiamine (as thiamine HCl) and vitamin E (as DL-alpha-tocopherol) led to an increased concentration in the rotifers after four days. On the other hand, addition of vitamin A (as retinyl palmitate) in the diet did not lead to a significant increase in vitamin A content (Srivastava et al, 2011). As copepods and their naupUi are the natural food for many marine larvae, rotifers are also enriched in iodine in order to obtain iodine levels similar to those of copepods (Srivastava et al, 2006). [Pg.164]

True antioxidants these are thought to block chain reactions by reacting with free radicals. The agent (e.g. DL alpha-tocopherol, butylhydroxytoluene) donates electrons and hydrogen atoms, which are accepted by free radicals, more easily than the active substance itself. [Pg.439]

On the contrary, a different antioxidant, OL-alpha-tocopherol, increases oxidation in cetomacrogol cream. This phenomenon is caused by peroxides, which originate firom dl alpha-tocopherol oxidation in the oil phase. The peroxides generate free radicals that initiate the oxidation of tretinoin. [Pg.440]

In work believed to be unpublished, Roberts and Schwarz following the same Selye granuloma pouch assay observed a potentiating effect of Vitamin E with selenium in the assay. The potentiation of the effect of selenite in the GPA was approximately four-fold when Vitamin E was administered (12.5 mg DL-alpha tocopherol) with selenite (Table I). Vitamin E alone was without measurable effect in reducing the exudate when given in concentrations of 0.8 mg to 12.5 mg per rat but was effective in reducing the exudate at dosages of 50 mg per rat. [Pg.45]
