Fluoroquinolones are extremely well tolerated. The most common effects are nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Occasionally, headache, dizziness, insomnia, skin rash, or abnormal liver function tests develop. Photosensitivity has been reported with lomefloxacin and pefloxacin. QTC prolongation may occur with gatifloxacin, levofloxacin, gemifloxacin, and moxifloxacin, which should be avoided or used with caution in patients with known QTC interval prolongation or uncorrected... [Pg.1038]

The adverse effects rates of levofloxacin are 1.3% for nausea, 0.1% for anxiety, 0.3% for insomnia, and 0.1% for headache. No levofloxacin-related adverse events were reported at a rate higher than 1.3%, and most were less common. High-dose levofloxacin (750 mg) was also well tolerated. Surveillance data reported low adverse event rates nausea 0.8%, rash 0.5%, abdominal pain 0.4%, and diarrhea, dizziness, and vomiting 0.3%. The adverse drug reactions rate for levofloxacin is stiU one of the lowest of any fluoroquinolone, at 2% compared with 2-10% for other fluoroquinolones (6-9). [Pg.2048]

A 56-year-old man taking lithium earbonate 400 mg three times daily for a bipolar disorder was admitted to hospital with bronchitis. He was started on levofloxacin 300 mg daily, and within 2 days was noted to have developed gait ataxia, dysarthria, coarse tremor, dizziness, vomiting, and confusion. Lithium toxicity was suspected, and because of the time course of the symptoms, an interaction with levofloxacin was considered responsible. Serum-lithium levels were found to have risen from 0.89 mmol/L (measured 2 weeks previously) to 2.53 mmol/L, and a reduction in his renal function was noted. Both drugs were stopped and the patient recovered over the following 4 days. His lithium level was found to be 1.12 mmol/L at that time. ... [Pg.1114]

Comparative studies Oral moxifloxacin for 2 weeks has been compared with levofloxacin -I- metronidazole in 460 women with uncomplicated pelvic inflammatory disease [41 ]. Clinical and bacteriological efficacies were comparable nausea (19% and 23%) and dizziness (16% and 15%) in the moxifloxacin and comparator groups were the most common adverse events. One moxifloxacin-treated subject developed Stevens—Johnson syndrome. [Pg.404]
