The fact that these masculine and feminine pairs attract each other was considered a divine gift in that this allowed them to recombine and return to unity. The alchemical Great Work, therefore, is a process of transmutation in which opposite polarities are combined, separated, and recombined to attain a state beyond duality. 

Mercury, as the spirit, is the Hfe-force, the Universal Soul in all things. It is passive, feminine, cold and watery, the eternal feminine, the Prima Materia—first matter, the matrix, the mother of all things. Unrefined, Mercury is symbolised by the dragon, the serpent, the Green Lion, and the white woman who, when exalted, becomes the White Queen or the White Lion, the unicorn, or the Moon called Luna and Diana, the virgin divinity in Nature. 

Although Ramalingar s hymns were penned in praise of the God Shiva, they were often addressed to a feminine audience with unqualified personal designations such as Amma or Akka, Mother or Sister. Perhaps indicating that the hymn was meant for an internal and distinctly feminine force that could propel the invocation along the proper channels of the inner cosmos, towards Shiva s divine abode.
