Diversified workforce

In conclusion, at NIGMS we need to evaluate the effectiveness of our programs designed to diversify the scientific workforce and promote the most effective components. The activities highlighted at this workshop illustrate some of the outstanding positive examples. They should be studied and, where possible, emulated. 

Diversity training, although perhaps not an across-the-board, stand-alone solution, is still an important component that should not be overlooked in a firm s efforts to diversify its workforce. For example, for any diversity initiative, it s critical to get buy-in and endorsement from senior management - and diversity training is a good start to make the business case for the diversity program. 

The behavior modification technique is a valuable method to use for industries with well-defined organizations (such as a plant or manufacturing setting). For those companies with a diversified and constantly changing workforce, the idea of instituting a zero-incidents concept may be more readily absorbed. For industries faced with turnover and cultural norms that interfere with safety performance, a safety movement that follows the zero-incidents concept may be right for you.
