Distribution and mobility

A detailed account of transport phenomena in crystals is outside the scope of the present review, though it is relevant to point out that factors which determine the rate at which reactants penetrate a barrier layer include the numbers, distributions and mobilities of vacancies. Oleinikov et al. [1173] conclude that Arrhenius parameters are devoid of any physical significance if due allowance is not made for imperfection concentration, which may vary with temperature (and a [77]).

Equally promising, though more thoroughly explored, are the measurements of intensities and band shapes of IR bands. The unique spectral characteristics of H bonded substances bespeak interesting conclusions to come from such measurements. As in the NMR shifts, the intensities reveal details of electron distribution and mobility. Whether the band widths indicate anharmonicity of the low frequency modes is not yet clear, but low temperature tudies will provide important clues to the proper interpretation. It is evident that the matrix isolation method has special possibilities and will be helpful. 

Another type of IR measurement which should be mentioned is the study of IR dichroism. Such data are valuable in determining gross molecular conformation and, more important, they contain information about electron distributions and mobilities as interesting as that obtainable from intensities. 

We have previously demonstrated that the extent of intracellular re-distribution and mobilization of iron, copper and proteins into the coronary flow depends on ischemic duration, and could serve as predictive criteria for the degree of heart injury [10,11]. The observed increase in iron and copper levels in the CFF ( free and bound states) resulted in the increase in free radicals production, which in turn could explain the post-ischemic heart damage. 

It is proposed that during the PC phase small, but significant, levels of intracellular iron undergo re-distribution and mobilization. This, in turn, produces the necessary signal for enhanced translation of ferritin mRNA, increasing its level and its capacity to scavenge and store iron.
