Distribution AIDS, global

Table 2 lists the distribution of HIV/AIDS in various regions of the world. The heavy infection level in sub-Saharan Africa is the result of several factors. First, the disease probably originated there. The oldest HIV sample came from the Republic of the Congo in 1959, but most researchers believe AIDS had been killing people many decades before then. Second, most of the countries in sub-Saharan Africa are underdeveloped and have lacked the resources to fight the disease or implement effective prevention plans. This region of the world now has 70% of the global total of HIV-infected people but only 10% of the world s... [Pg.14]

Tear breakup time (TBUT) is used clinically as a diagnostic aid in dry eye syndromes and for testing the efficacy of therapeutic approaches. Assessment of TBUT, typically defined as the interval between the last complete blink and the development of the first randomly distributed dark spot in the tear film, is commonly used to estimate tear film stability. Fluorescein can be instilled into the eye with either a pipette or wetted fluorescein strip and observed with cobalt blue excitation and with or without a yellow barrier filter for observation. Unfortimately, there is still no global standard as to how TBUT should be determined and no consensus as to appropriate cut-off values. [Pg.286]

CAMPUS (Computer-Aided Material Preselection by Uniform Standards) has become the most successful and widely used materials database for plastics. Today more than 50 plastics producers worldwide are providing technical data on their products using CAMPUS. More than 200,000 copies have been distributed worldwide. This remaikable success is based on the unique concept, which combines uniform global protocols for acquisition and representation of data with user-friendly software. CAMPUS is the first and only database system which provides truly comparable data on products from different suppliers. The CAMPUS Windows program and material data are distributed for free from participating manufacturers. You can obtain the CAMPUS data by visiting the CAMPUS website to download CAMPUS. www.campusplastics.com... [Pg.617]

The second, main point of concern are the global chain properties, as described by statistical means. More specifically, we inquire about the distribution of chain conformations. As has already been indicated, for the coarsegrained chain this problem can be solved immediately. Distribution functions may be directly deduced, with the aid of the following procedure. We split the chain into subchains of miiform length, this length being much larger than Ips- Then, as indicated in Fig. 2.5, we associate with the chain a sequence of vectors... [Pg.24]
