Discovery of the W boson

In a sense the discovery of the W was quite expected, and its existence has been taken for granted throughout this book [the first edition]. Nonetheless the present luminosity of the CERN pp collider is still well below its design specification of 10 cm s , and the events that have been interpreted as Ws have emerged from some 10 pp collisions collected in a 30 day data-taking period between November and December 1982—a formidable achievement.
