Discharge channel

This equation was obtained by fitting a curve to the plotted values of Cd for a great many experiments and is purely empirical. Capillarity is accounted for by the second term, while velocity of approach (assumed to be uniform) is responsible for the last term. Rehbock s formula has been found to be accurate within 0.5% for values of Z of 0.33 to 3.3 ft and for values of H of 0.08 to 2.0 ft with the ratio H/Z not greater than 1.0. It is even valid for greater ratios than 1.0 if the bottom of the discharge channel is lower than that of the approach channel, so that backwater does not affect the head.

The anodes and cathodes are assembled between two end plates, up to 60 anodes in the FM21-SP and up to 90 anodes in the larger FM-1500. A key feature of both designs is the elimination of any external piping to the individual cell compartments by the use of a simple but effective internal manifold arrangement. As shown in Fig. 5.30, the anode and cathode panels are designed to form feed and discharge channels when assembled. 

The pile should be well and firmly based on the subsoil. If the latter is waterlogged, it should be drained. The overburden material should be placed layer by layer, for only in this way will there be adequate compaction of the dumped material by the haulage and handling vehicles travelling over it during the build-up of the pile. The layers should not exceed 8m in thickness. Each individual layer should end at a distance of 4 m before the one below, so that a berm is formed. The berms should be inclined slightly backward, and surface water run-off should be intercepted in adequate discharge channels and removed under controlled conditions, in such a way as to prevent erosion on the berms and slopes or at the toe of the overburden pile. 

In the flotation method, which is named bubble-film extraction, the rising air bubbles do not reach the plane mirror subphase. Instead of that, they penetrate into a special discharge channel as was described in [1-3]. In the discharge channel, the air bubble flow is transformed into air-film flow.
