Disc-stack centrifuges

Microbial cell recovery is carried out in a continuous disc-stack centrifuge. The centrifuge is operated at 5000 rpm for separation of baker s yeast. At a feed rate of 601/min, 50% of the cells are recovered. At constant speed, solid recovery is inversely proportional to flow rate.

The disc stack centrifuge is a versatile device, which may be used for separating sohd/hquid mixtures in continuous, semi-continuous and batch configurations (see Figures 1.12 and 1.13). While disc stack centrifuges are able to accept a wide range of feeds they are both mechanically complex and expensive. Moreover, the close stacking of conical discs means that mechanical cleaning can be difficult, and resort is often made to chemical cleaning. 

The use of conical discs, or angled vanes, on the conveyor will theoretically enhance the Sigma value, the clarification capacity, of the centrifuge. To estimate the Sigma value of a stack of conical discs, the formula used for disc stack centrifuges may be employed [11] ...

Figure 17.11(a) presents the diagram of disc-stack centrifuge. The apparatus rotates with an angular speed about its axis of symmetiy. It eontains staeked truncated cones (radii Re and R, angle oc, number of inter-vane ehaimels N and spacing e between two cones). The supply of fluid (density pf and dynamic viscosity /) and particles (diameter d and density ps) is central, around the axis.
