Disadvantage bonded

A major disadvantage of a matrix representation for a molecular graph is that the number of entries increases with the square of the number of atoms in the molecule. What is needed is a representation of a molecular graph where the number of entries increases only as a linear function of the number of atoms in the molecule. Such a representation can be obtained by listing, in tabular form only the atoms and the bonds of a molecular structure. In this case, the indices of the row and column of a matrix entry can be used for identifying an entry. In essence, one has to distinguish each atom and each bond in a molecule. This is achieved by a list of the atoms and a list of the bonds giving the coimections between the atoms. Such a representation is called a connection table (CT). [Pg.40]

For each pair of interacting atoms (/r is their reduced mass), three parameters are needed D, (depth of the potential energy minimum, k (force constant of the par-tictilar bond), and l(, (reference bond length). The Morse ftinction will correctly allow the bond to dissociate, but has the disadvantage that it is computationally very expensive. Moreover, force fields arc normally not parameterized to handle bond dissociation. This thesis has been completely devoted to catalysis by relatively hard catalysts. When aiming at the catalysis of Diels-Alder reactions, soft catalysts are not an option. Soft catalysts tend to coordinate directly to the carbon - carbon double bonds of diene and dienophile, leading to an activation towards nucleophilic attack rather than to a Diels-Alder reaction . The disadvantage of molecular mechanics is that there are many chemical properties that are not even defined within the method, such as electronic excited states. Since chemical bonding tenns are explicitly included in the force field, it is not possible without some sort of mathematical manipulation to examine reactions in which bonds are formed or broken. In order to work with extremely large and complicated systems, molecular mechanics software packages often have powerful and easy-to-use graphic interfaces. Because of this, mechanics is sometimes used because it is an easy, but not necessarily a good, way to describe a system. [Pg.57]

Although the acrylate adhesives are readily available and studies have shown that they can produce reasonable bonding properties, they have the disadvantages of having high shrinkage, high fluid absorption, and low service temperatures. Acrylate adhesive applications would be limited. The development of EB-curable epoxy adhesives would have applications in the aerospace and automotive industry and potential wider uses.
