Directed Inorganic and Organometallic Synthesis

Although a great deal of excitement has surrounded the use of ionic liquids as solvents for organic synthesis, the rational synthesis of inorganic and organometallic compounds in ionic liquids has remained largely unexplored.

Part of this symposium was directed to the synthesis, properties and applications of inorganic and organometallic macromolecules with network structures. The section on organo-oxo macromolecules relevant to sol-gel processing addresses the interesting synthesis and challenging characterization efforts in this area. Brinker (p. 314) outlines the complex chemical and physical factors which affect network formation and structure resulting from the hydrolysis of a tetraalkoxysilane.

The direct fluorination of inorganic,1,2 organometallic,3 5 and organic compounds,6-8 employing the LaMar9,10 and Exfluor-Lagow" methods, has impacted the synthesis of fluorinated compounds over the past 25 years. Among the most important applications of direct fluorination are the synthesis of fluoropolymers from hydrocarbon polymers and the conversion of the surface of the hydrocarbon polymers to fluoropolymer surfaces.12,13 The direct fluorination process is an excellent approach to the synthesis of fluoropolymers.
