Dimethylol-dimethyl hydantoine (DMDM hydan-toin, Glydant). This is a cosmetic preservative and formaldehyde releaser. The patch-test concentration 1% aqua (Perrenoud et al. 1994).

The effectiveness of dimethylol-dimethyl-hydantoin is based on the release of formaldehyde and is not negatively influenced by anionic, cationic or non-ionic compounds. The active ingredient therefore is proposed as a suitable preservative of very low toxicity for cosmetics and pharmaceutical products addition rates 01-0-2%. Combinations with /7-hydroxybenzoates (Section 6.1.10) have proved successful. Isothiazolinones (Section 13.3) may also be used in mixtures for increasing the efficacy against fungal growth.

It should also be noted that lists of regulated substances also exist for general cosmetics substances banned or restricted (e.g. the maximum concentration in released formaldehyde must not exceed 100 mg/kg for authorized formaldehyde donors, such as the dimethylol dimethyl hydantoin (DMDM hydantoin), imidazolidinyl urea and Quatemium-15), positive lists for cosmetic colorants and preservatives.
