The most common active ingredients in fabric softeners are cationic surfactants. Traditional examples are dihydrogenated tallow dimethyl ammonium chloride (dhtdmac), amido-imidazoline quaternaries, and difatty diamidoamine quaternaries like bis(alkyl amidoethyl)-2-hydroxyethyl methyl ammonium methyl sulfate (see Fig. 1).
