While John Wilson was in New Orleans, visiting his wife in Charity Hospital and talking with Horace Mann Bond at Dillard University, he left Alexzine, the eldest daughter, in charge of the younger children. ... 

Bond drew the plight of the Wilson family to the attention of Will Alexander, head of the Farm Security Administration. Doctor Will was the leading figure in the interracial movement of the interwar era director of the Commission on Interracial Cooperation, trustee of the Rosenwald Fund, and the first president of Dillard University. But all Alexander offered was a modest donation, in the name of the CIC, toward the NAACP s defense of Luther Wilson. Should Wilson s lawyers choose to forgo his fee, Alexander noted, the money saved could be used in helping Mr. [John] Wilson to get started elsewhere. ...
