Diffusion of Nitrogen in Thorium

The composition-average diffusion coefficients of nitrogen in a-Th, DN(a-Th), were calculated from analyses of the nitrogen distribution in the Th metal. The values as illustrated in Fig. 1 are represented by the equation DN(a-Th) (in cm2/s) = 2.1 x10 -exp(-22500/RT) temperature range 1118 to 1763 K, where the energy of activation is Ea = 22500 cal/g-atom N. The diffusion of N atoms in the a-Th lattice is seen in Fig. 1 to be some 10 times faster than in the ThN lattice having the same metal atom configuration [1]. [Pg.3]
