For a reversible redox couple, Ramaley and Krause (1969) and Christie, Turner Osteryoung (1977) have presented a general analytical solution under conditions of semiinfinite linear diffusion. Dimensionless currents (T) are defined (Osteryoung O Dea, 1987) as ... [Pg.92]

The differential material balances contain a large number of physical parameters describing the structure of the porous medium, the physical properties of the gaseous mixture diffusing through it, the kinetics of the chemical reaction and the composition and pressure of the reactant mixture outside the pellet. In such circumstances it Is always valuable to assemble the physical parameters into a smaller number of Independent dimensionless groups, and this Is best done by writing the balance equations themselves in dimensionless form. The relevant equations are (11.20), (11.21), (11.22), (11.23), (11.16) and the expression (11.27) for the effectiveness factor. [Pg.122]

In section 11.4 Che steady state material balance equations were cast in dimensionless form, therary itancifying a set of independent dimensionless groups which determine ice steady state behavior of the pellet. The same procedure can be applied to the dynamical equations and we will illustrate it by considering the case t f the reaction A - nB at the limit of bulk diffusion control and high permeability, as described by equations (12.29)-(12.31). [Pg.168]

For the same reaction in a pellet of finely porous structure, where Knudsen diffusion controls, the appropriate dynamical equations sre (12.20) and (12.21) if we once more adopt approximations which are a consequence of Che large size of K. These again have a dimensionless form, which may be written... [Pg.170]

Where surface-active agents are present, the notion of surface tension and the description of the phenomena become more complex. As fluid flows past a circulating drop (bubble), fresh surface is created continuously at the nose of the drop. This fresh surface can have a different concentration of agent, hence a different surface tension, from the surface further downstream that was created earlier. Neither of these values need equal the surface tension developed in a static, equiUbrium situation. A proper description of the flow under these circumstances involves additional dimensionless groups related to the concentrations and diffusivities of the surface-active agents. [Pg.92]

Sohd Catalysts Processes with solid catalysts are affected by diffusion of heat and mass (1) within the pores of the pellet, (2) between the fluid and the particle, and (3) axially and radially within the packed bed. Criteria in terms of various dimensionless groups have been developed to tell when these effects are appreciable. They are discussed by Mears (Ind. Eng. Chem. Proc. Des. Devel., 10, 541-547 [1971] Jnd. Eng. Chem. Fund., 15, 20-23 [1976]) and Satterfield (Heterogeneous Cataly.sls in Practice, McGraw-Hill, 1991, p. 491). [Pg.708]

Asymptotic Solution Rate equations for the various mass-transfer mechanisms are written in dimensionless form in Table 16-13 in terms of a number of transfer units, N = L/HTU, for particle-scale mass-transfer resistances, a number of reaction units for the reaction kinetics mechanism, and a number of dispersion units, Np, for axial dispersion. For pore and sohd diffusion, q = / // p is a dimensionless radial coordinate, where / p is the radius of the particle, if a particle is bidisperse, then / p can be replaced by the radius of a suoparticle. For prehminary calculations. Fig. 16-13 can be used to estimate N for use with the LDF approximation when more than one resistance is important. [Pg.1526]

FIG. 16 36 Dimensionless time-distance plot for the displacement chromatography of a binary mixture. The darker lines indicate self-sharpening boundaries and the thinner lines diffuse boundaries. Circled numerals indicate the root number. Concentration profiles are shown at intermediate dimensionless column lengths = 0.43 and = 0.765. The profiles remain unchanged for longer column lengths. [Pg.1538]

The dimensionless numbers in tlris equation are the Reynolds, Schmidt and the Sherwood number, A/ sh. which is defined by this equation. Dy/g is the diffusion coefficient of the metal-transporting vapour species in the flowing gas. The Reynolds and Schmidt numbers are defined by tire equations... [Pg.105]

The design approach is particularly feasible for those reactions in which chemical and pore diffusion rates are most important. For flow related phenomena semi-empirical, dimensionless correlations must be relied on. Therefore in this book scale-up will be used in the more general sense with the airri of using methods that are fundamentally based wherever feasible. [Pg.1]

The reduced velocity compares the mobile phase velocity with the velocity of the solute diffusion through the pores of the particle. In fact, the mobile phase velocity is measured in units of the intraparticle diffusion velocity. As the reduced velocity is a ratio of velocities then, like the reduced plate height, it also is dimensionless. Employing the reduced parameters, the equation of Knox takes the following form... [Pg.264]

Equations 8-148 and 8-149 give the fraction unreacted C /C o for a first order reaction in a closed axial dispersion system. The solution contains the two dimensionless parameters, Np and kf. The Peclet number controls the level of mixing in the system. If Np —> 0 (either small u or large [), diffusion becomes so important that the system acts as a perfect mixer. Therefore,... [Pg.743]

The dimensionless number Le is called the Lewis number (m Russian literature it is called the Luikov number). The Lewis number incorporates the specific heat capacity of humid air pCp (J/m C), the diffusion factor of water vapor in... [Pg.80]

The value of the numerator of the right-hand side of Eq. (7.47) depends on the geometric configuration of the outlet Rq, Hq, cos0 ). The denominator represents the dimensionless distance from the outlet. For a given diffuser or a plaque Eq. (7.47) becomes... [Pg.452]

For many cooling waters, including seawater and also drinking water, where corrosion rates are 70 to 100% of the limiting diffusion current, the use of dimensionless group analysis can then be applied. [Pg.317]

In preparative selective chromatography, the formation of broad zones of the substances is determined by the formation of sharp boundaries of each zone. The formation of these sharp boundaries of substance zones in column sorption processes for systems in which the interphase transfer is limited by substance diffusion in sorbent grains [104, 122, 123] is determined by the dimensionless criterion X ... [Pg.43]

This is obvious for the simplest case of nondeformable anisotropic particles. Even if such particles do not change the form, i.e. they are rigid, a new in principle effect in comparison to spherical particles, is their turn upon the flow of dispersion. For suspensions of anisodiametrical particles we can introduce a new characteristic time parameter Dr-1, equal to an inverse value of the coefficient of rotational diffusion and, correspondingly, a dimensionless parameter C = yDr 1. The value of Dr is expressed via the ratio of semiaxes of ellipsoid to the viscosity of a dispersion medium. [Pg.89]

The dimensionless parameter Dpc / is called the Lewis number, which is the ratio of the diffusion coefficient of a gas through the mixture divided by the thermal diffusion coefficient of the gas mixture. [Pg.105]
