Due to their persistent silica skeletons and their diversity, diatom remains provide a good record of past and present environmental conditions. Cameron (2004) recently showed that they could be used to compare samples that had been in contact with water and for the investigation of time of death in drowning. Through the recent advances in analytical quality control and use of multivariate statistics, their use in forensics is likely to develop further. In a similar way, phytoliths (the plant opal silica structure that accumulates in some plants) have been used to differentiate soils with otherwise similar mineralogy (Marumo and Yanai 1986). [Pg.295]

The apparatus must be adequately insulated and the column jacket provided with the requisite heat compensation (section 7.7.3). The use of an automatic column head (section 7.5.3) allows the distillation to be performed with a minimum of attention. In the present case it would be useful to place a contact thermometer, connected to a bell via a relay (section 8.2.2), in the column head. The thermometer would be set to the boiling point of benzene, and when a signal was heard, the initial reflux ratio of 9 would be increased, say, to 20. In the same way it would be progressively raised to the final value of 50. The load may conveniently be regulated by means of a contact manometer actuated by the pressure differential (section 8.4.2). In accordance with the amount of the charge the still pot may be a pilot-plant flask (section 7.6.1) or a round-bottomed flask of 4 to 10 litres capacity, heated by a flask heater (section 7.7.1). [Pg.197]

Particle concentration and size distribution in raw water have extensive and complex effects on the performance of individual treatment units (flocculator, sedimentation tank, and filter) and on the overall performance of water treatment plants. Mathematical models of each treatment unit were developed to evaluate the effects of various raw water characteristics and design parameters on plant performance. The flocculation and sedimentation models allow wide particle size distributions to be considered. The filtration model is restricted to homogeneous suspensions but does permit evaluation of filter ripening. The flocculation model is formulated to include simultaneous flocculation by Brownian diffusion and fluid shear, and the sedimentation model is constructed to consider simultaneous contacts by Brownian diffusion and differential settling. The predictions of the model are consistent with results in water treatment practice. [Pg.353]
