The design of an amphiphilic system due to non covalent binding strongly depends on the right choice of "complementary" components which is based on the well known ideas of the lyotropic mesomorphism. The whole set of experimental data on the phase behavior of complexes based on dicarboxylic acids proves the fact of the stabilization of lamellar phases in hydrogen bond complexes independently of the structure of the carboxylic acid - polymer or low molecular mass one. 

Compared to aliphatic monocarboxylic acids, aliphatic dicarboxylic acids exhibit a slightly higher affinity toward carbonate-selective stationary phases. The retention behavior of aliphatic dicarboxylic acids such as succinic acid, malonic acid, and oxalic acid is very similar to that of nitrate and sulfate.
