Dicarbollide carborane derivatives

The spectra of the dicarbollide carborane derivatives (Me4,N)Fe(C2B9Hi 1)2 and CpFe(C2B9Hii)2 are very similar to those of ferricinium salts [41], and confirm the similarity of the bonding in the dicarbollide to that of ferrocene. 

Two procedures have been developed to synthesize these mixed complexes with plain pyrrolyl and dicarbollide derivatives. Procedure A uses the preformed nido carborane... 

The NLO properties of a series of salts of the iron bis(dicarbollide) anion [3,3 -Fe(l,2-C2B9Hii)2] with dipolar and polarizable cations were studied but the results obtained were disappointed [378]. On the other hand, the metallocarborane anions [3,3 -M(l,2-C2B9Hn)2] (M = Co, Fe, Ni, Cu) and their derivatives would be of interest as structural elements for design of new molecular ferri- and ferromagnets, synthetic metals and semiconductors [379-386], Nickel(IV) bis(dicarbollide) [3,3 -Ni(l,2-C2B9Hn)2] was proposed as candidate for a molecular rotary motor with electrical or photocontrol of the intramolecular rotation of the carborane ligands around a nickel axis [387,388].
