Dosing relates to the various methods of applying chemical product to the cooling system. Dosing is normally proportional to the makeup water demands or the system volume, and the most common method is via the use of positive displacement, diaphragm metering pumps.

Diaphragm pumps are used for metering small amounts of additive into a fuel or fuel oil. The cost of these pumps is low compared to other positive displacement pumps. These pumps are excellent metering pumps and are primarily designed for low-pressure, low-flow applications. Also, they are not recommended for pumping high-viscosity fluids.

PPDS works on the principle of metering pumps and employs diaphragm, bellows, centrifugal, or vacuum-pressure-dispense pumps. These systems may be used for slurries including shear-sensitive slurries and cause minimal recirculation during slurry usage and replenishment. 

Typically, the entire contents of a calcium hypochlorite container are emptied into a mixing tank where they are readily and completely dissolved in water. The resulting corrosive solution is stored in and fed from a stock solution vessel constructed of corrosion-resistant materials such as plastic, ceramic, glass, or rubber-lined steel. Solutions of 1% or 2% available chlorine can be delivered by a diaphragm-type, chemical feed pump or metering pump. 

The model Gnomodos 8 02 has several metering pump heads either with plungers or diaphragms. The drive is designed for strokes from 0 to 15 mni. Up to 5 pump heads can be operated simultaneoudy. 

Most pumps in HCl service are nonmetallic. Wetted parts may be PVC, CPVC, PP, PTFE, PVDF, FRP, ceramic, or carbon. Self-priming centrifugal pumps are a standard, but diaphragm-type metering pumps also are widely used. 

Examples of actuators are rheostats to set and control electrical current, valves, flaps, and metering pumps for liquids. The actuator, which is most frequently encountered in chemical process engineering, is the diaphragm valve (Figure 12.29). 

The hydraulic diaphragm pumps currently available for high pressure applications are partly derived from the development of metering pumps for the process industries. There is a wide variety of materials of construction. The pumps usually have crank drives with adjustable stroke.
