B. In Windows 2000, Network and Dial-Up Connections is also a submenu of Settings. 

First, the Network program is now called Network and Dial-up Connections (NDC hereafter) and is organized differently. When you first access the NDC window, you will see that instead of a list of all components, you are greeted simply by a Make New Connection icon and a Local Area Connection icon, as shown in Figure 18.5. 

I f you want to connect your Windows 95 machine to the Internet, the first step is to get an account with an Internet Service Provider. They will give you a sheet with all the information you need to connect your machine, or in some cases, they will give you a disk with a preconfigured connection and browser so all you have to do is install the software and you ll be ready to connect to the Internet. A browser is a piece of software used to access the World Wide Web, and a Dial-Up Networking (DUN) connection holds the settings needed to access an ISP. In this section, we will look at how to install and use each of these. 

To create a new DUN connection, open the Dial-Up Networking folder under Start > Programs > Accessories. This will open a window that shows all the DUN connections that are configured. You must create a new one to connect to the... 

Internet. To do so, double-click the item in this folder called Make New Connection. This will bring up the screen shown in Figure 18.26. From this screen, you can give the connection a name. As with other names in Windows 9x, use one that reflects what it is (in this case, a connection to the Internet). Additionally, this screen will allow you to select which modem you want to use to dial this connection (if you only have one configured in Windows 9x, it will default to that one).

In the Network Connection Wizard, choose Dial Up to the Internet and the Welcome to the Internet Connection Wizard (ICW) window appears (Figure 18.32). That makes three nested wizards. A bit extreme, no ... 

Connecting to the Internet is simple once you get the connection configured. Simply double-click the connection, enter the password (unless you chose the Save Password button previously), and click Connect. A window will appear that allows you to follow the status of the connection (Figure 18.34). You should hear the modem dial and then connect. When it connects, the status screen will say, Verifying Username and Password, and then Connected. Once you are connected, the status screen will go away and you will see an icon on the taskbar (the same icon that s on the status screen). At this point, you are connected to your ISP and, through it, to the rest of the world. You can then fire up your favorite Web browser and start surfin . 

If you are configuring the system for someone who just wants to click and go, you can also right-click the Internet Explorer icon on the desktop and use the Connection tab of the Internet Settings window to configure auto-dial. Set the connection you have created as the default and specify that the system should "Always dial my default connection." Any time an application needs to access the Internet, it can simply initiate the DUN connection automatically. 

What would you need to do to create a new Dial-Up Networking (DUN) connection within a Windows 9x system ... 

First, put three gallons of hot tap water in one of the cans and put the lid on it. It should boil pretty soon if you put the hotplate dial on full heat. Then the dry ashes, which you have run throijgh a piece of window screen, are put in while stirring- Put in the ashes a pound or so at a time so the heat is kept at a simmer. When the ashes are alJ in and simmering away, put on the lid and leave it alone for about a half hour. Then remove the lid and stir some more to keep the ashes from lumping on the bottom. Do this every half hour for about three hours, turn off the heat and let the ashes settle overnight. 

There are a number of plug-in electrical resistance boxes containing spectral characteristics of the dyes, and those corresponding with the dyes that have been selected are inserted at A. I he concentration dials at D are then adjusted till all the dots lie on the straight line across the oscilloscope display window (Fig. 26.37), when the necessary concentrations can be read on the dials. I he positions of the dots represent AK/S between the pattern and the selected dyes at sixteen spectral intervals and when all the spots are on the meridian line AK/S=zero in every case. If, however, it is not possible to bring AK/S to zero at all the sixteen spectral intervals it may be that the wrong dye or dyes have been chosen and another selection must be made. 

The two dials form a channel hence the name single-channel analyzer. If the E dial is changed to Ej, then pulses with heights between Ej and Ej -I- AE will be counted. In other words, the width AE, or window, of the channel is always added to E.
