Diallylammonium salts

The influence of radiation dose on the polymer composition and the swelling degree of (pAM-DAEA-HCl) are shown in Table 3. The results show that the percent of acrylamide in the copolymer is higher than that of the amine. This can be attributed to smaller reactivity ratios of monomers of diallylammonium salts relative to acryl-... [Pg.126]

The polymerization of nonconjugated diene monomers might be expected to afford polymer chains with pendant unsaturation and ultimately, on further reaction of these groups, crosslinked insoluble polymer networks. Thus, the finding by Butler et a .,, 03, n5 that polymerizations of diallylammonium salts, of general structure 8 [e.g. diallyldimethylammonium chloride (9)] gave linear saturated polymers, was initially considered surprising. [Pg.186]

Free radical polymerizations may also be used to synthesize a host of cationic polyelectrolytes. Diallyl quaternary ammonium salts such as dimethyl-diallylammonium chloride, diallyldiethylammonium chloride, and diallylmethyl b-propionamido chloride are an interesting class of monomers which will... [Pg.5]

Quaternary ammonium polymers were first discovered by Butler and Bunch (13) in 1949. In that investigation, tri- and tetraallyl quaternary ammonium salts were polymerized to form highly cross-linked water-insoluble polymers. In 1951, Butler and Ingley (14) reacted diallyl quaternary bromide salt to produce a polymer that was water-soluble and did not form a gel. Later, Butler (15) showed that the chloride ion form of diallylammonium monomers gave more useful polymers because of their higher molecular weights. [Pg.176]
