The experimental studies reported here have led to the identification of a large number of gas-phase ion/molecule reactions and reaction sequences which act to build ions containing Si-C and Si-O bonds. Si-C bonds were observed to be established in the reactions of Si with acetylene, cyanoacetylene, methylcyanide and acetone, while diacetylene and possibly methane were found to be resistant to silicon implantation. The results obtained with methanol, ethanol, and formic acid are striking In that they suggest that the sequential chemistry with these molecules initiated by Si is inexorably directed toward increasing silicon-oxygen co-ordination. [Pg.197]
