Developments of Magnetic Recording System

4 Challenges from Developments of Magnetic Recording System [Pg.231]

Due to new opportunities and continued computer min-iaturizations (e.g., laptops replacing desktops and desktops getting smaller), the HDD is in transition to smaller form factors. The 2.5 in. and smaller disk sizes are rapidly growing. In 2004, a quarter of HDD shipments were 2.5 in. or smaller. By 2008 these smaller form factor drives could count for about one-half of HDD shipments. [Pg.231]

New applications in consumer electronics require more storage capacities than the traditional computing section, leading HDD to a high demand on higher capacity drives. As shown in Fig. 32, the areal density roadmap in mass produc- [Pg.231]

In the perpendicular recording, the magnetic polarity is perpendicular to the media surface and can be read with a GMR sensor similar to the sensor used in LMR. In this case, the media is effectively situated within the head gap, potentially relaxing many limits on both head and media design experienced in longitudinal recording. [Pg.232]
