Deterioration in strength

Oxidative degradation can also occur in other polymers including natural rubber, polystyrene, polypropylene, nylons, polyurethanes, and most natural and naturally derived polymers. With the exception of fluo-ropolymers, most polymers are susceptible to oxidation, particularly at elevated temperature or during exposure to ultraviolet hght. Oxidation usually leads to increasing brittleness and deterioration in strength.

If the refractory material is multiphase and consists of phases with different thermal expansion Heating and cooling will promote the appearance of microcracking, which leads to a deterioration in strength. In such cases, materials usually do not crack. Porosity diminishes the probability of microcracking. 

The complex interaction between these different processes makes the hardening reaction dependent on the gassing time and the silicate composition. Care must be taken to avoid over reaction, which leads to a deterioration in strength. 

This boron- and carbon-doped SiC exhibits excellent strength and stiffness, extreme hardness, and thermal and chemical resistance. The strength of this system is not affected by temperatures up to I650°C. Creep is virtually nonexistent up to I400°C. CycHc durabiUty testing conducted at I370°C in air showed no deterioration of strength after 3500 h (94). 

Hydrolytic degradation of polymers is still the main reason for the occurrence of faults in processing. This form of degradation commonly causes a reduction of the IV, associated with a deterioration in the mechanical properties, particularly the tensile strength. A third set of samples was constructed from Al-Tl. As observed using other metallic adherends, little difference in joint strength was observed over a period of 60 days between samples in which the substrates had been alkaline cleaned, lubricated or left untreated. In four patients with a pure motor demyelinating neuropathy treated with oral prednisolone (60 mg/day) motor function rapidly deteriorated within 4 weeks of starting prednisolone (SEDA-19, 375 54). Intravenous immunoglobulin some months later in two of them produced clear improvement in strength and motor nerve conduction. 

The thermal shock damage resistance of 0.5 pm in situ formed composites will be expected to be much less than that of preformed composites. For 3 pm and 11 pm spinel composites, addition of 30 10% spinel may provide some improvements. Further deterioration of strength in the coarsest spinel composite as a result of thermal shock should be a minimum at 20% (Fig. 14.12). In general coarser (22 pm) preformed spinel powders appear to be more beneficial than finer powders, but there is no obvious advantage with additions of more than 30%.74,103...
