Design pared down

Earlier sections of this chapter discussed factors that will affect the selection of metrics data to collect, and there are various approaches to select the metrics. Usually the metrics designer assembles a large list of candidate metrics using input from individuals with detailed knowledge of the process safety issues. For example, if your experimental goal is to design and build a hydrogen system to fuel a fuel cell unit for home power backup, and you found that the cost of your plan does not fit your budget, you will either have to pare down the system, find less expensive or used components, or come up with some ingenious innovation to bring the cost into line. 

Finally, we note that this textbook is information rich. It includes many of the topics that normally appear in a full year college chemistry course, but it is designed for a course that takes only one semester. To manage the task of paring down the volume of materials, we ve left out some topics and shortened the discussion of others. Having the Internet available means that you can always find more information if what you have read sparks your interest. 

The initial motivation for studying membrane oscillators was to understand biological processes [6-8]. Model synthetic systems have been constmcted that are simpler than the biological systems they were intended to mimic, and the goal has been to isolate key principles using pared down designs. As often occurs with model systems, however, synthetic membrane oscillators exhibit their own peculiar behaviors, leading to new lines of study.
