Design of Single-Cell EFC Compartment

The compartment of a single-cell EFC consists of the following components  [Pg.345]

Anode Typically high surface area, open porosity, with immobilized enzymes. The anode might contain an integrated internal electronically conductive network (internal current collector) and an internal mechanical support stmcture (or both integrated in one). [Pg.345]

Cathode Similar construction to the anode, or in the form of an air-breathing electrode, or construction akin to the air-breathing MEA of conventional proton exchange membrane fuel cells. [Pg.345]

The anode and cathode compartments are formed by electrode packaging that also serves as an external current collector and encloses the fuel in the cell. For the case of oxygen-sensitive enzymes, the electrode packaging and sealing must be hermetically tight. [Pg.345]

ENZYMATIC FUEL CELL DESIGN, OPERATION, AND APPLICATION [Pg.346]
