In the area of moleculady designed hot-melt adhesives, the most widely used resins are the polyamides (qv), formed upon reaction of a diamine and a dimer acid. Dimer acids (qv) are obtained from the Diels-Alder reaction of unsaturated fatty acids. Linoleic acid is an example. Judicious selection of diamine and diacid leads to a wide range of adhesive properties. Typical shear characteristics are in the range of thousands of kilopascals and are dependent upon temperature. Although hot-melt adhesives normally become quite brittle below the glass-transition temperature, these materials can often attain physical properties that approach those of a stmctural adhesive. These properties severely degrade as the material becomes Hquid above the melt temperature. [Pg.235]

Thermal Properties. Thermal properties include heat-deflection temperature (HDT), specific heat, continuous use temperature, thermal conductivity, coefficient of thermal expansion, and flammability ratings. Heat-deflection temperature is a measure of the minimum temperature that results in a specified deformation of a plastic beam under loads of 1.82 or 0.46 N/mm (264 or 67 psi, respectively). Eor an unreinforced plastic, this is typically ca 20°C below the glass-transition temperature, T, at which the molecular mobility is altered. Sometimes confused with HDT is the UL Thermal Index, which Underwriters Laboratories estabflshed as a safe continuous operation temperature for apparatus made of plastics (37). Typically, UL temperature indexes are significantly lower than HDTs. Specific heat and thermal conductivity relate to insulating properties. The coefficient of thermal expansion is an important component of mold shrinkage and must be considered when designing composite stmctures. [Pg.264]

Strict control of the fusion process is imperative. In addition to thickness, hardness, continuity and adhesion checks, correct cure may be assessed by differential scanning calorimetry techniques, which are designed to measure any difference in the glass transition temperature of a laboratory-cured powder and the cured coating taken from the factory-coated pipe. [Pg.670]

Membrane design and fabrication requires more optimization than the synthesis of the right type of polymer. For example, those phosphazene polymers that contained the highest ratios of methylamino groups were too brittle to be used as membranes (because of the high glass-transition temperatures) and too soluble in aqueous media. However, the polymers could be made insoluble in water by radiation cross-linking as shown in reaction (54). [Pg.114]
