Description of the Thermal Model

A quasi-three-dimensional bed model is envisioned as one that comprises both an axial model (one-dimensional) and a cross sectional model (two-dimensional). The former is used to independently determine the one-dimensional axial temperature profiles for the freeboard gas and the bulk bed. It is implicitly assumed that the details of the energy redistribution that occurs within the bed do not significantly influence heat transfer between the bed and the freeboard.
