Delirium camphor

Poisoning has occured through the accidental administration of camphor liniment to young children by mistake for castor oil. The symptoms are nausea, vomiting, colic disturbed vision, delirium, mental confusion and epileptic convulsions. Recovery is the rule. But in rare cases death may occur from respiratory failure (126-128). [Pg.64]

When not contraindicated, it is the best anodyne and soporific with which we are acquainted. A state of high fever or inflammation forbids its use, as its primary operation is that of a stimulant. It is seldom given when there is a parched tongue and dry skin. A. Oral. Manifestations of acute oral overdose usually occur within 5-30 minutes after ingestion. Burning in the mouth and throat occurs immediately, followed by nausea and vomiting. Ataxia, drowsiness, contusion, restlessness, delirium, muscle twitching, and coma may occur. Camphor typically causes abmpt onset of seizures about 20-30 minutes after ingestion. Death may result from CNS depression and respiratory arrest or may be secondary to status epilepticus. Chronic camphor intoxication may produce symptoms similar to Reye s syndrome. [Pg.148]
