Definition of terms used in tensile testing

Tensile stress (nominal) The tensile force per unit area of the original 

Tensile strength (nominal) The maximum tensile stress (nominal) sustained 

The tensile stress that occurs at break of the test piece. 

The tensile stress at which occurs the first marked inflection of the stress-strain curve, where an increase in strain occurs without any increase in stress. 

The original length between two marks on the test piece over which the change in length is determined.
